Car Paint by Registration – Find Your Vehicle Colour

Quick answer: a UK registration number can often be used to identify the vehicle and its factory colour information. It does not literally contain the paint code itself; the registration is used to look up vehicle data. If the exact colour cannot be confirmed from the registration, the paint code may still be required.

Can car paint be matched from a registration number?

Often, yes. For many UK vehicles, the registration allows the make, model, year and associated colour information to be identified. This makes registration lookup one of the quickest ways to order colour-matched touch-up paint without searching the vehicle for a paint label first.

However, registration databases are not perfect. Some vehicles have incomplete colour data, multiple paint variants, previous registration changes, imports or manufacturer records that do not expose the exact paint code. In those cases, we may need the paint code from the vehicle before mixing the order.

What information can a registration lookup provide?

  • Vehicle make and model
  • Approximate model year or registration year
  • Factory colour information where available
  • A route to the likely manufacturer paint code where the database supports it

What if the registration does not return the exact colour?

Check the vehicle for its manufacturer paint code. Common locations include the door jamb, door frame, under the bonnet, boot area and spare-wheel well. The location varies by manufacturer.

Which product should I choose once the colour is identified?
