How to Repair Bumper Paint Scratches and Scuffs

Quick answer: small bumper chips can be repaired with a pen or bottle, but larger scuffs normally need proper preparation, suitable primer where required, colour-matched aerosol paint and lacquer where the paint system requires it.

Can a plastic bumper be repaired with touch-up paint?

Yes, provided the damage is mainly cosmetic and the plastic itself is not badly split or distorted. The repair method depends on the size of the damaged area and whether the coating has been rubbed through to bare plastic.

Which paint format is best?

  • Small chips and narrow scratches: touch-up pen.
  • Small scuffs or deeper local damage: touch-up bottle.
  • Larger bumper scuffs and prepared sections: aerosol paint.

Basic bumper-paint repair process

  1. Wash, degrease and dry the bumper.
  2. Remove loose paint and feather damaged edges carefully.
  3. Repair gouges or surface damage before painting.
  4. Use a primer or adhesion product appropriate to the exposed substrate where required.
  5. Apply colour in light, overlapping coats.
  6. Apply lacquer if required by the colour/paint system.
  7. Allow the coating to cure before polishing or heavy washing.

Why does bumper paint sometimes look a slightly different shade?

Even from the factory, the same colour can appear slightly different on plastic and metal because of substrate, application angle and light reflection. Ageing, previous repairs and metallic-flake orientation can add further variation.

How much paint do I need for a bumper?

For a tiny chip, a pen or bottle is normally enough. For a larger bumper corner or sprayed repair, a 400ml aerosol gives much more even coverage than trying to brush a wide area. The exact amount depends on repair size, colour, number of coats and coverage.

For larger repairs see our 400ml colour-matched aerosol.
